Hiram A. Boaz was the second president of Southern Methodist University and a bishop of the Methodist church. Most of the papers in this collection are of a personal nature: two Bibles, a Methodist hymnal, awards, medals and certificates, biographical information, and letters to his wife and children. Career-related material includes sermon notes and records from his fundraising activities on behalf of SMU. Material related to his book "Eighty-four Golden Years" is also included.

Hiram Abiff Boaz played a crucial role in the establishment and early years of Southern Methodist University. He was a major driving force behind the idea of erecting a Methodist university in the North Texas region. Shared governance had a short life at SMU.
